PMRS / Gaza 23-8-2014 13:00
A three-day ceasefire followed by five other days ended when Israel renewed its attacks against Gaza Strip on Tuesday night, August 19th. The Israeli offensive going on for over six weeks has so far left nearly 2100 martyrs and 10500 others injured.
According to the Ministry of Health, more than 3,000 children have been injured, of which an estimated 1,000 will suffer from a lifelong disability. The United Nations estimates at least 373,000 children require direct and specialized psychosocial support. And, based on the total number of adults killed, there may be up to 1,500 children orphaned.
The Palestinian Medical relief society continues to provide its services to the public and has mobilized field teams to provide services to displaced people in school shelters.
PMRS has eleven teams that provide medical care, psychosocial services, and wound dressing for injured people and provide people with disabilities assistive devices. The teams also distribute humanitarian assistance. So far, our teams visited a total of 54 school shelters with a total population of 113,868 people.
The situation in shelters is not stable. People, whose houses sustained partial damage usually move back to their homes during ceasefire time. But in light of the renewed Israeli attacks, these people have movedback to the schools amid uncertainty of what is yet to come.
Damage sustained by PMRS centers:
As a result of ongoing Israeli bombardment, and a number of PMRS centers incurred damage on different levels, some we were able to fix and operate, while others remain closed.
